Calculate the distance Earth-Sun

Tuesday, the 8th of June 2004, the planet Venus will pass in front of the sun. A lot of people world-wide will see a little black spot moving in front of the sun, this progression is called "a transit", which will occur for more than five hours. This phenomenon is very rare, it occurs twice : once every 122 years, and once 8 years later.

Two distant observers will not see exactly the same position of Venus in front of the sun, this is the effect of perspective. This effect allows measuring the distance between Earth and Sun or " the astronomical unit".

By myself I'm "observing" this rare phenomenon, BUT if I share my observations with other distant people, I "measure" the Astronomical unit!

Before the transit : Get : An instrument to observe the sun, an accurate clock, something to write down your observations and/or a device to record the transit, like a digital camera or video camera. You must practice using your material. Venus2004 team will contact you to give you more details about the parameters to measure during the observations.

After the transit: Venus2004.org team will collect the data from the observations and will calculate the astronomical unit. The results as well as the names and countries will be released.

You'll find a lot of useful information which will help you to do all this successfully in the following sections. You think this is difficult? You must take your time and learn step by step. If you do not achieve your goals you will have a second chance in 2012 and then 2117...
